Freelance writer visits and gives advice

Dan Shepherd visited Valencia's west campus on Thursday.

He came with much to be said, and lots of advice for the upcoming writers in Ken Carpenter's news reporting class.

Shepherd has his own freelance business (Soundbite Productions) he opened in Orlando, Fl in 1994.

As a freelance writer he has worked for several clients NBC News in all aspects nightly news, Today Show, ABC, PAX TV.

Shepherd has also worked as a photographer throughout his career and in his many jobs.

He stressed to the students, "build relationships."

Says he's always looking for stories and pitching stories. "As a freelance writer you have to keep trying but you cant pitch too much to piss the client off, its a delicate balancing act."

He has been apart of several recent disasters in americas history from 9-11 to Katrina hitting the gulf coast.

He was apart of the media that covered terrorist attacks on the world trade center working for NBC.

He also told the student "not to be afraid to get turned down, for every 20 stories I pitch i get about one to three get chosen."
